DIY Wood Polish from the Tree of Life

Do you love the great outdoors, but dislike being pestered by bugs? You’re not alone. Bugs can turn an outdoor adventure into an uncomfortable situation. Make sure to avoid any discomfort bugs may bring and pack Arborvitae essential oil for your next outing. Arborvitae oil is great for hiking and camping due to its chemical components—tropolones. Tropolones have chemical properties that act as a natural insect repellant. For an enjoyable hiking or outdoor experience, apply Arborvitae essential oil to your wrists and ankles. Another way to repel unwanted creepy crawlies is by placing a few drops of Arborvitae essential oil into a diffuser and letting the warm aroma fill your home. Now sit back and relax, knowing that the little critters are doing their best to leave your house in peace.

Bring back the shine to your favorite tables, countertops, floors, and more with this simple recipe for homemade wood polish with doTERRA essential oils.

Reduce Toxic Load

I grew up in a product-junkie household. It seemed my mom, a cosmetologist, had every professional salon product available at the time. My friends loved looking in our cupboards and testing different things on their hair and skin.

Like many American households, we also had numerous cleaning products, candles, and air fresheners, tons of lawn chemicals in the garage, and gave no consideration to other sources of toxicity.

It wasn't until I was in my late twenties that I began considering reducing my exposure to toxicity. An author and radio host I listened to went through a horrific ordeal with toxic mold in his family's home. Once they were on the road to recovery, he and his wife began to use his show once a week to educate listeners on the steps they were taking to detox and live better.

At the time, their advice looked like deprivation to me. No candles? No great smelling lotion? No fabric softener? How sad.

It wasn't long after that I was introduced to essential oils. I quickly learned to employ these beautiful tools to transform our household cleaning and my beauty routine without any feeling of deprivation. We used them for everything from pest control to pesto. Not only were they safer, at a few pennies per drop, they were also less expensive and more effective!

Our body is beautifully designed to eliminate toxicity, but unfortunately, our modern lifestyles provide a greater toxic load then they can handle. Have you transitioned your household yet? What are some areas in which you still use toxic chemicals?

Rest and Manage Stress

Everyone has stress, no matter what you do or who you know. The way you manage that stress will determine a great deal of the course of your life. Here are some quick tips to better manage stress and create more time for rest.

Be proactive about your schedule and write rest time in ink. We all have the same number of hours in a day, and of course there are seasons when we work harder than others, but we have to build sustainability into our schedule. Ask yourself, "If I continue at my current pace, how quickly will I burn out?"

When you sit down to manage your calendar, apply InTune to the reflex point on your big toe. This will help you to focus and make lists for the week. Keep the big-picture of your life in focus.

We should be proactive as we're committing to things. Saying "yes" and taking on more obligations than we can handle can lead to burn-out. While saying "no" can be uncomfortable in the short term, in the long term it creates more space for the activities that are building into our legacy.

Here's an example: If one of your goals is financial freedom, you may need to cut back on volunteer activities and focus more of your working hours on income-producing activities. When you say you value one thing, and your calendar reflects something different, your priorities are out of alignment.

Another way people misuse rest time is to simply check out by mindlessly scrolling their phone or binge-watching television. These activities may seem like rest for a short time, but they aren't really recharging our batteries. There is a big difference between checking out and fully resting. Rather than taking in more information from TV or social media, try meditating. Lie flat on your back and imagine the tension from your body sinking into the floor. Take several deep breaths. Release worries from the day that truly aren't yours to carry. Apply Peace Blend over your heart.

Managing your time will be a key in managing stress and allowing time for rest. Try it this week and tell me what you think. What is one shift you can make to bring your schedule into alignment with your priorities?

Eating right is the foundation for a wellness lifestyle. Unfortunately, the industrialization of our food supply has left nutrition lacking. Soil depletion, genetic modification, and pesticides have drastically changed in the last several decades.

Aside from growing our own food, what can we do to maximize nutrition?

Food enzymes can be beneficial for breaking down food and utilizing more of the available nutrition. When taken on an empty stomach, enzymes can also carry away stagnant waste in the digestive tract. People who have trouble digesting certain foods may be lacking an enzyme required for digestion.

Even with a perfect diet, supplementation may still be necessary. In an ideal world, I would get all of my micronutrients, vitamins, minerals, omegas, and probiotics from whole foods. The inadequacies of our food supply, however, make it nearly impossible. I've noticed tremendous shifts in my overall health since adding supplements. These whole-food derived supplements fill in my nutritional gaps, and come with a 30-day money-back guarantee. Might as well give them a whirl.

The Big Picture of Wellness

Often times when people are just getting started with essential oils, a shift in thinking is required. Once the shift in thinking happens, we can start to see shifts in health and wellness too.

Wellness is a big-picture endeavor, and essential oils are a key tool to building it. Many people, however, wish to employ essential oils as a magic bullet for chronic health concerns, but that is an unrealistic expectation.

For example, when I am teaching a class, a mother will ask how to help her child's irritated skin with essential oils. This is an unrealistic expectation because ongoing skin issues are typically a reflection of gut health. Gut health can be supported by a healthy diet (typically eliminating dairy, sugar, and gluten either temporarily or permanently depending on the individual), probiotics, and essential oils. Topical application of the oils sometimes provides temporary relief, but this is like putting masking tape over the "check engine" light on your car's dash board. Maybe you can't see the problem, but the cause is still present.

To truly care for our health, we need to approach it as a big-picture endeavor where many factors make up the whole. These factors are universal, no matter your age, gender, race or ethnicity.

Of course, this approach takes work, thought, and patience, which is why many people still fall into the pattern of getting a script for some "masking tape" from their doctor.

If you are ready to shift your thinking and put positive habits into practice, here are some areas on which you will need to focus.

  • Eat Right
  • Exercise
  • Rest and Manage Stress
  • Reduce Toxicity
  • Informed Self Care
  • Proactive Health Care

Wild Orange oil is one of dōTERRA’s most popular oils—and with good reason! Not only does Wild Orange oil have a variety of uses, but its invigorating, energizing aroma is hard to resist. One of my favorite ways to use Wild Orange is to add a few drops to my drinking water for a flavorful beverage. Do Your Research

Long before I was a mom and wellness advocate, I was a writing instructor. One of the constant reminders I found myself instilling in my students was, "seek excellent sources." It doesn't matter if you're writing a research paper or making wise consumer decisions, you always need to consider the source.

You can't believe everything you read on the internet! I realize how funny that sounds coming from something you found on another mom blog or Pinterest post.

Some good sources regarding essential oils can be found at aromatools dot com and share oils dot com. You will also find more and more scholarly research becoming available on pub med dot gov which is a public database of peer-reviewed, scholarly or clinical research.

dōTERRA has created several eBooks to assist you in educating others about the oils and their aromatic and internal uses. There are PDF and a digital versions of each book, which allow your customers to read it for themselves or have it read to them while they follow along. All the eBooks can be found here:https://doterra.com/US/en/ebooks.

Hope Story

Alzheimer’s is a fairly common disease in the United States affecting approximately 5.1 million Americans. There are many ways to help fight this disease including donating to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. Another way to help is to volunteer with a chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association as Wellness Advocate, Mary Gauldin, has done. She started volunteering when her grandfather was diagnosed with the disease and has worked to “provide a better quality of life for those living with this devastating disease.” What a wonderful cause to be a part of! What sort of ways have you found to volunteer in your own community?  Visit https://doterra.com/US/en/about/caring-volunteer-alzheimers-association for more information.
